5 Signs It’s Time to Optimize Your Leadership
Most leaders understand the value of ongoing development but often overlook the signs that it’s not only time to improve but they must optimize their leadership.
In our work at TLI, when we work with a leader to optimize their leadership and performance, we are not only helping them get better, we work with them to accelerate their results.
A client who completed our Optimize Your Leadership program said, “I knew it was going to help me get better but I didn’t realize that all the tools you have rooted in science would actually be like rocket fuel for me and my leadership…thank you.”
So, you may be asking yourself whether it’s time for you to optimize your leadership. Here are five signs that it is, in fact, time:
Sign #1
Negative Feedback from Your Boss
Your boss told you that you are underperforming and not meeting their expectations, and gave you 90 days to improve. You got some feedback, but aren't sure how to improve quickly.
Sign #2
Unfavorable Engagement Data
Your team's recent engagement survey results show that they need and want more from you. You want to improve your collaboration, communication, relationships, and/or coaching skills, but don't know where to start.
Sign #3
You Want a Promotion
You've decided to level up your role in 2024. You want a promotion, but know you need to improve your leadership skills. You see how leaders in other roles operate, but don't know how to bridge the gap.

Sign #4
You’ve Been Told You Have Potential
Your manager says you have potential, but not enough to be "ready" for the next challenge. You have some areas to improve, but it seems like it could be a long time before your manager feels you're ready. You need to know what to do and how to manage that relationship so you can advance your career.
Sign #5
You Are Reaching Burnout
You're working hard, but you can't keep up with the demands of your leadership role. You're struggling to deal with the constant change and challenges. You're exhausted and on the brink of burnout. You need to reboot your leadership style so you can feel inspired and hopeful again.
In addition to these signs, there are many other signs that you will begin to see that it’s time to optimize your leadership. You may ask yourself these questions:
1. Where am I feeling stretched and outside of my zone of competence?
2. Where am I under delivering on my commitments?
3. Where could I support my team more so they are fully engaged and accountable?
